November Featured Tenant: L&L Hawaiian Barbecue

HAWAII’S COMFORT FOOD

Two scoop rice and mac salad to cure your hunger! The plate lunch is a well-known Hawaii staple when it’s time to fill our bellies, but do you know its origin? During the boom of Hawaii’s sugar plantations and pineapple fields, the field workers often brought their lunches in bento boxes which typically comprised of a healthy portion of rice and the previous night’s dinner leftovers. As the plantation era ended, the plate lunch survived as they were no longer served in bento boxes, instead on compartmentalized paper plates where it gets its name, “plate lunch.”

These field workers came from various parts of the world contributing to the cultural melting pot in which we see influencing local favorites found on the menu at L&L Hawaiian Barbeque. Local favorites like chicken katsu, loco moco, teriyaki beef, and kalua cabbage (just to name a few), served with the standard two scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad makes for great meal that and the cause for a classic case of the “kanak attack.” Swap out the carb-heavy options for something lighter and healthier such as brown rice or even a fresh mixed salad without taking away from the delicious protein options.

Although Johnson Kam and Eddie Flores Jr. are two big names that come to mind when L&L is mentioned, here at Kamehameha Shopping Center we like to think of Vivi Pang and her sister Sophia that make this particular L&L a favorite spot as they serve up our favorite dishes with a friendly smile.
